When you need this conversion
Solar panel efficiency tells you how much of the sunlight hitting a panel's surface gets converted into electricity. It matters most when roof or mounting space is limited, since a higher-efficiency panel produces more power from the same physical area. It also lets you sanity-check a manufacturer's wattage claim against the panel's physical dimensions.
The formula in plain terms
Efficiency as a percentage equals the panel's rated power divided by its area in square meters multiplied by 1000 watts per square meter, then multiplied by 100. The 1000 W per square meter figure represents Standard Test Conditions (STC): the amount of solar irradiance, at 25 degrees Celsius cell temperature, used to rate every panel on its datasheet. Reversing the formula, expected rated watts equals efficiency multiplied by area in square meters multiplied by 1000.

Practical tips
Compare module efficiency, not cell efficiency
Datasheets sometimes highlight cell efficiency, measured on a single cell in ideal lab conditions, which is higher than the module efficiency of the finished panel once framing, spacing, and glass are included. Always use module-level dimensions and wattage for a real-world figure.
Real-world output is lower than STC rating
Actual roof temperatures often exceed the 25 degree Celsius STC baseline, and panels lose roughly 0.3-0.5 percent of output per degree above that. Dust, shading, and inverter losses reduce real annual output further below the STC-rated efficiency.
Higher efficiency pays off most with limited space
On a small roof, RV, boat, or off-grid cabin, choosing a higher-efficiency panel lets you fit more total wattage into a fixed area. On a large open roof or ground mount, a lower-efficiency, lower-cost panel per watt is often the more economical choice.
